Firing at two mosques in New Zealand on Friday killed 49 people and injured more than 20 others, killing at least one man with a gun. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called it a terrorist attack.
A gunman broadcast a live attack on a mosque in Christchurch on Facebook after issuing a declaration of hatred for immigrants.
Aden said New Zealand was at the highest level of security threat. She said the four people detained by the police had extremist views, but had not appeared on any police watch lists before.
New Zealand Police Chief Mike Bush said 49 people were killed in two mosques and a man nearly 30 years old was charged with murder.
"Obviously, at present, this can only be described as a terrorist attack," Aden said.
Video widely circulated in social media shows a gunman driving to a mosque, entering the mosque, and then shooting at the crowd inside. The video was apparently shot by the man and broadcast live online during the attack.
Video shows dead or injured worshippers lying on the mosque floor. Reuters has yet to confirm the authenticity of the video.
A man, Ahmad Al-Mahmoud, who claimed to be at the Al Noor Mosque at the time, told the media that the gunmen were white-haired, wearing helmet and bullet-proof vest. As the worshippers knelt down to pray, the gunmen rushed into the mosque.
