Police have arrested Turkish suspects following a shooting on a tram in Utrecht, the Netherlands on Monday, killing three people and injuring five others.
Police said the suspect, Gokmen Tanis, a 37-year-old Turkish man, had been arrested after hours of pursuit.
Shortly after the morning rush hour, the city of Utrecht was blocked. Dutch authorities initially said the shooting was apparently a terrorist attack. After the police released Tanis's images and warned the public not to approach him, they searched several locations.
Hours after the shooting, the suspect's motives remain unclear. Prosecutors say this may be for "family reasons," and Turkish official Anadolu news agency quoted relatives of the suspect as reporting that the suspect had shot a relative on the tram before shooting someone who tried to help him.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkish intelligence agencies are investigating whether the shooting was motivated by individuals or terrorist acts.
Earlier, the Dutch authorities raised the threat of terrorism in Utrecht to the highest level. Schools were told to close their doors and paramilitary police went to airports, other important infrastructure and mosques to strengthen security.
The country's national counter-terrorism agency said the threat level was downgraded to one level after the suspect was arrested.
