Ethiopia said Sunday that a preliminary analysis of the black boxes found in the wreckage of the plane crashed on March 10 showed that the crash, which killed 157 people, was "significantly similar" to that of Lion Airlines in Indonesia last October.
Both aircraft are Boeing (BA.N) 737 MAX 8 passenger aircraft, both crashed a few minutes after takeoff, and pilots reported control problems before the crash. Concerns about the safety of the aircraft have led to the suspension of the aircraft by multinational air traffic control authorities around the world, and the stock market value of Boeing has evaporated billions of dollars.
Investigators are trying to determine why the plane crashed shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa and to find out if there is any similarity between the crash and the Indonesian Lion Airlines accident in January last year. The crash in Indonesia resulted in 189 deaths.
"This is the same as the accident in Indonesia. So far, there are obvious similarities between the two crashes, "said Muse Yiheyis, spokesman for Ethiopia's Ministry of Transport.
"Data has been recovered successfully. The data were validated by both the American team and our team in Ethiopia. The Minister thanked the French Government. We will release more information in three or four days, "he told Reuters.
