An official in the French Presidential Office said that President Mark Long will chair a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 26, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Juncker to discuss multilateral relations between Europe and China.
The official said the talks will focus on trade, climate and Sino-European relations. France wants the EU to discuss with China in a more coordinated way, rather than focusing on bilateral relations with China among EU members.
At present, the EU is considering a more defensive strategy for China because of the slow pace of China's economic opening up, key acquisitions by Chinese enterprises in Europe, and the perception of European governments that the Chinese government has not supported free trade.
"This meeting is the first step," the official said, adding that it would help lay the foundation for concrete results of the China-EU Summit on April 9.
Marklong arrived in Brussels on Thursday to attend the EU Leaders'Summit. He talked about "the awakening of Europe", that is, China is seeking to produce high-end products that can compete with European manufactures.
"Since I took office, I have been calling on people to really realize this and defend European sovereignty," Mark Long told reporters.
