Dozens of South Korean officials went to the Korea-North Korea joint office Monday to try to preserve a slightly improved relationship, despite the decision of the North Korean authorities last week to withdraw.
The opening of the joint office in Kaesong, North Korea, in September was one of the important developments in the past year in the relaxation of relations between North Korea and South Korea.
In the absence of North Korean counterparts, the Unification Ministry of Korea did not give a clear explanation of what 64 officials stationed in the common office should do, but a spokesman said Seoul was trying to "normalize" the operation of the office.
North Korea withdrew its joint office in Kaesong on Friday, damaging South Korean President Wen Youyin's efforts to end hostility between the two sides.
Although South Korea has not directly linked North Korea's move to the breakdown of the Hanoi summit, experts have pointed out that Pyongyang's move appears to be calculated to persuade the United States to ease sanctions by putting pressure on South Korea, after President Trump said he would not impose more sanctions on North Korea.
