The U.S. House of Representatives failed to overturn President Trump's first veto on Tuesday, so that Trump's "state of emergency" declared last month to build the U.S. -Mexico border wall will continue.
The Democrats controlling the House of Representatives did not receive enough Republican support to reach the two-thirds majority needed to overthrow Trump's veto. Only 14 Republican MPs joined 234 Democratic MPs in favor of overthrowing the veto, an increase from the last time the House voted against the border wall emergency. Another Democrat and two Republicans did not vote.
In the end, Congress failed to overturn the veto by 248-181 votes, and Trump may now continue to seek funds from federal accounts for the construction of the border wall.
