U.S. officials told Reuters Wednesday that progress has been made in all areas discussed in the U.S. -China trade negotiations and unprecedented progress has been made on sensitive issues such as compulsory technology transfer, but there are still differences.
U.S. Trade Representative Lethizer and Treasury Secretary Nuchin arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a new round of talks with Chinese officials with a view to reaching an agreement that would end the trade war.
The talks are the first face-to-face talks between China and the United States in weeks, and a new round of talks will be held in Washington next week. The initial goal is for US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to hold a summit at the end of March to sign an agreement.
Reuters interviewed four senior U.S. government officials.
One official said that China's proposal went further than before, giving both sides hope of signing the agreement. The United States insists that the agreement must include structural reform of China's economy.
