The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Monday it was about to launch an investigation into three million cars made by Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and Kia Motor (000270.KS), after assessing more than 3,000 fire reports that had injured more than 100 people.
NHTSA said the survey was in response to a request from the Center for Auto Safety in June.
The survey involved vehicles for 2011-2014 Kia Optima and Sonto, 2010-2015 Kia Soul, and 2011-2014 Modern Sonata and Santa Fe.
The two companies have recalled more than 2.3 million vehicles since 2015 to eliminate the risk of engine fire.
Hyundai shares fell 2.5% in early Seoul and 1.1% in Kia.
