It has been nearly three years since Britain unexpectedly decided to withdraw from Europe in a referendum in 2016. British politics has been in crisis. It is still unclear how, when and whether it will leave the EU, which it joined in 1973.
Britain's House of Commons has vetoed Teresa May's withdrawal agreement three times, and on Monday they still haven't found an alternative plan with a majority of support. This week, Teresa May expects parliament to vote on the agreement for the fourth time.
The deadlock has delayed Britain's withdrawal from Europe for two weeks, scheduled for March 29. Teresa May will host a cabinet meeting in Downing Street for several hours in the hope of finding a way out of the mystery.
"Over the past few days, the possibility of Britain's non-agreement to withdraw from Europe has risen, but we still hope to avoid this situation," Michel Barnier, the EU's chief representative in charge of negotiations on Britain's withdrawal from Europe, said at an event in Brussels.
Damian Hinds, Britain's education minister, said he hoped Parliament would finally approve Teresa May's exit agreement this week, saying it was still the best outcome.
If Teresa May's agreement cannot be approved by Parliament, she can opt to withdraw without agreement, hold general elections, or ask the EU to postpone withdrawal for a long time in order to negotiate a withdrawal agreement that maintains closer ties with the EU.
