The company will provide free patents for hybrid vehicles until 2030 because it hopes to popularize the use of low-emission vehicles as much as possible before the global automotive industry turns to all-electric vehicles.
Toyota said it would provide nearly 24,000 patent licenses free of charge for hybrid power systems consisting of engines, power converters and batteries.
"We have received a lot of inquiries from companies about vehicle electrification systems that recognize the need to promote hybrid and other vehicle electrification technologies, so it seems time to cooperate," Shigeki Terashi, Toyota's vice president, said in a statement Wednesday.
Toyota has more than 80% of the hybrid vehicle market.
