Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday that Canada is considering ways to make its retaliatory tariffs on the United States more effective, but she did not respond to a previous comment by a senior official that Canada might do so.
Canada imposed tariffs on US products worth 16.6 billion Canadian dollars ($12.5 billion) in May last year in retaliation for US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium products. Canadian preliminary tax list includes orange juice, maple syrup, whiskey, toilet paper and other categories of products.
"We're definitely looking for ways to update the list of retaliations... to have a bigger impact," Fleming said.
According to Progressive Reporter and Politico, Canadian Ambassador to the United States, McNaughton, told U.S. agricultural reporters Monday that Canada may announce a new tax list as soon as next week.
The reports quote McNaughton as saying that the targets of retaliation may include a considerable number of agricultural products, possibly apples, pork, ethanol and wine.
