"It's reasonable to postpone the withdrawal date to October 31 to give Britain time to make the final choice," Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Twitter, adding that the summit in June would allow EU leaders to "assess the situation".
Donald Tusk, president of the European Summit, tweeted Thursday that he had agreed to postpone the British withdrawal, but did not elaborate. He will inform British Prime Minister Teresa May of the outcome of the summit and seek her consent.
The late-night conclusion means that Britain can avoid leaving without an agreement on Friday, and that the extension agreed by the European Union is three months longer than that required by Resha May. So she could have more time to win the support of a majority of Parliamentarians for her withdrawal agreement.
French President Mark Ron advocated an extension to June and strongly opposed the tendency of other leaders to extend it for longer. If prolonged for too long, it will increase the possibility that Britain will change its mind and remain in the EU. The summit finally compromised and agreed to postpone the withdrawal to October.
On October 31, the five-year term of the current European Commission just expired.
EU diplomats say EU leaders will meet again in June to assess the situation. If Teresa May and the opposition Labour Party succeed in forming an alliance on her exit agreement, Britain may have left the EU by then. But there is no sign that Teresa May has reached an agreement with Labour.
In order to remain a member of the European Union after June 1, Teresa May has agreed to organize Britain to participate in the European Parliament elections held on May 23. It remains unclear whether the vote will take place and to what extent it will actually turn into the second referendum on membership of the European Union, which some hope will lead to the cancellation of Britain's delisting from Europe.
