U.S. President Trump threatened Tuesday to impose tariffs on $11 billion worth of European Union products because Washington believes the European Union is providing unfair subsidies to Airbus (AIR.PA).
The EU initiative will involve the EU's appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the United States subsidize Boeing (BA.N).
WTO arbitrators have not yet determined the final amount of potential countermeasures in these two cases.
Earlier this week, the European Commission said it had begun preparations for counter-measures in the Boeing case. However, it implies a willingness to consult with the United States on the premise that there are no preconditions and that the goal of the negotiations is to achieve a fair outcome.
EU diplomats say they expect the Executive Committee to publish a list of products on April 17 and begin public consultation, after which adjustments may be made to the list.
The final amount determined by WTO arbitrators may also be lower. The EU initially asked the WTO to approve $12 billion in counter-measures.
The award of the arbitration body may not be made until March 2020. In the case of the United States, the WTO may rule in June or July this year.
"It can be said that the European Commission has prepared ahead of schedule under the stimulation of the United States," said an EU diplomat.
