Britain, unlike other countries, openly invites global candidates to compete for the position of president of the Bank of England.
However, as the first non-British central bank president, Carney's tenure is seen as a successful model of British financial diplomacy, and the British government is keen to promote its so-called "globalized Britain" concept after leaving Europe.
Hammond told the media last week at the semiannual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the process of identifying a new president had "started". Carney's successor is likely to be one of thousands of delegates to the conference.
On February 1 next year, Mr. Carney will leave after more than six years in office, when the post will be vacant. Before becoming president of the Bank of England, Carney served as president of the Bank of Canada for five years.
But Britain's withdrawal from Europe poses obvious challenges in terms of both short-term growth and regulatory relations with the EU in the longer term. In addition, the next president of the Bank of England has to face a severely divided domestic political situation.
"The political battle over Britain's withdrawal from Europe may prevent some candidates from applying for the position, because the Bank of England president will inevitably be involved in it," Hammond said in Washington.
Since assuming the presidency of the Bank of England in July 2013, Carney postponed his departure in October 2016 and September 2018 to help Britain prepare for its withdrawal from Europe. By the time Carney postponed his second term, the search for a successor had begun, and Hammond had made it clear that he was willing to accept the next central bank president from other countries.
