Hu Houkun, Huawei's rotating chairman, said Tuesday that Huawei had not discussed with Apple (AAPL.O) the provision of 5G chipsets. Huawei is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world.
Hu Houkun made the remarks at the Global Analyst Conference held by Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen. Prior to that, Ren Zhengfei, founder of Huawei, told CNBC that Huawei was "open" to selling fifth generation (5G) chips to Apple.
"We haven't discussed this with Apple," Hu said, reiterating Huawei's intention not to become a chipset supplier at the moment. He also said he expected Apple to compete in the 5G mobile phone market.
Hu Houkun said that by the end of March, Huawei had won 40 Commercial Contracts for the establishment of 5G telecommunications infrastructure, compared with more than 30 in the last release.
Ren Zhengfei, founder of Huawei, said in an interview with CNBC this week that the company was "open" to selling 5G modem chips to Apple, but did not elaborate on it.
