A French warship passed through the Taiwan Strait this month, U.S. officials told Reuters. This is a rare move for a European country; it may be welcomed by the United States, but it will exacerbate tensions with the Chinese government.
The move could prompt other U.S. allies, such as Japan and Australia, to consider similar actions.
Two U.S. officials who asked for anonymity said a French warship passed through the Taiwan Strait on April 6.
One official said the vessel was a French frigate of the Vendemiaire and was followed by Chinese military vessels when it passed. The official was not sure whether French warships had crossed the Taiwan Strait before.
U.S. officials said that after the French warship crossed, China had known that France would no longer invite it to participate in the naval parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Navy. Warships from India, Australia and other countries participated in the campaign.
Patrik Steiger, spokesman for the French General Staff, declined to comment on the military mission.
American officials are reluctant to speculate about the purpose of French warships crossing the Taiwan Strait, or whether they are trying to advocate free navigation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense of China have not immediately expressed their views.
