A source close to French Defense Minister Florence Parly told Reuters on Thursday that France was in contact with Chinese authorities after French warships crossed the Taiwan Strait earlier this month.
Earlier, China's Ministry of Defense said that China had made strict representations to France regarding the passage of French warships through the Taiwan Strait. At present, the United States and its allies increasingly advocate freedom of navigation in international waters near China.
The source said, "On average, the French Navy passes through the Taiwan Strait once a year without any incident or reaction. France reiterates that its adherence to freedom of navigation is in conformity with international maritime law."
