Patrick Shanahan, acting U.S. Defense Secretary, said Monday that he had approved the dispatch of aircraft carrier strike groups and bombers to the Middle East because of signs of "a credible threat from the Iranian regime".
The United States is deploying the Lincoln carrier strike group and a bomber contingent to the Middle East to send a clear message to Iran, National Security Adviser John Bolton said Sunday.
"This is a prudent redeployment of [military] assets in response to signs of a credible threat from the Iranian regime," Shanahan said on Twitter.
"We urge the Iranian regime to stop all provocations. We will hold the Iranian regime responsible for any attack on the U.S. military or our interests."
Shanahan did not provide more details in his tweet.
Three U.S. officials, who asked for anonymity, told Reuters on Monday that intelligence agencies had received "a number of credible threats", mainly from Iran and its paramilitary forces. They said U.S. troops in Syria and its surrounding waters were also worrying.
