Nuchin did not elaborate on the timing of future consultations, but he believes that the two-day high-level consultations with Chinese officials in Washington last week were constructive.
“I expect that we will travel to Beijing in the near future to continue these discussions,” he said at a hearing from the US Senate Appropriations Committee. “We will continue to discuss. There is still a lot of work to be done.”
Nuchin’s speech was consistent with the cooling of the Trump administration’s comments on China. Previously, the world's two largest economies raised their tariffs on imported goods, setting off a wave of sell-offs in global stock markets.
On Tuesday, US President Trump denied that negotiations with China had broken down and expressed optimism about the possibility of an agreement between the two countries to end the trade war, saying that they had an "unusual" relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump also urged China to buy more American produce. He plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the G20 summit in Japan next month.
US agricultural products, including soybeans, have been the target of China’s retaliatory tariffs, and Trump’s key political supporters, American farmers, are disappointed that the two sides have failed to find a solution to the trade dispute.
A US Department of Agriculture spokesperson said that as part of the 2018 assistance program, the Ministry of Agriculture has so far issued $8.52 billion in subsidies to US farmers through direct payments. The plan aims to compensate for the losses caused by China and other trading partners to impose trade tariffs on farmers.
