Roberto Azevedo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), told reporters on Thursday that global leaders gathering in Japan next week must take concrete action on trade issues, not just renew their call for easing trade tensions.
US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting at the Osaka summit of the Group of 20 (G20) will be a "welcome signal," Azevido said at the United Nations Journalists Association (ACANU) in Geneva.
Azedovic said that the WTO will issue its latest monitoring report next week, which will show that the G20 economies are implementing new tariff barriers at a much faster rate than the historical average, and there is no sign of easing the trend.
Trump calls himself a "tariff man" and increasingly uses high import tariffs or threatens to raise them.
"As far as the WTO is concerned, we do hope that trade restrictions will be lifted in time because, as I said before, these measures affect global economic growth and trade," Azedovic said.
