Sovereign wealth funds have flocked to India to participate in various fields, from airports to renewable energy, mainly because of the country's political stability, the growing middle class, and the implementation of a number of reforms to attract foreign investment.
In addition to focusing on the stock and bond markets, wealth funds and state pension funds have expanded their investments to the private market.
"India is very popular with sovereign wealth funds," said Tihir Sarkar, partner of Cleary Gottlieb in London. The company has several well-known sovereign fund clients.
"Almost every jurisdiction in the Western world is raising the threshold for foreign investment, but India is doing the opposite. Population structure is also more attractive, and there are many assets that sovereign funds like, such as infrastructure, which has a huge demand for foreign financing.
So far this year, foreign institutional investors have inflows into the Indian stock market of $11 billion, exceeding the annual total of the previous four years, making 2019 expected to be the largest inflow of foreign capital since 2012. India's BSE index has risen nearly 10% so far this year.
