Tensions between Iran and the United States remain grim, after Trump said on Friday that he cancelled his plan to retaliate against Iran for shooting down U.S. drones because it was not a proportionate response.
"I'm not looking forward to war," Trump said on NBC's Meet the Press program.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated to reporters Sunday that the United States wants to negotiate with Iran.
"We are prepared to negotiate without any preconditions." He said. "They know exactly how to find us. I am confident that when they are ready to engage us sincerely, we will be able to start these dialogues. I'm looking forward to that day.
Pompeo also said Monday it would announce "significant" sanctions against Iran aimed at further blocking Iran's resources to support its activities in the region.
"We will cut off the resources they need to protect the interests of the United States and the security of the American people around the world." Pompeo said before visiting American allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and discussing Iran with them.
Another source of tension in the region is the attack on a Saudi civil airport Sunday by Yemen-Iran-backed Houthi, which killed one person and injured seven others.
Trump has said he is also ready to seek an agreement with Iran to allow the country's troubled economy to recover quickly, apparently with a view to easing tensions.
