Wang Shouwen, Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy Representative for International Trade Negotiations, said Monday that the Sino-US Economic and Trade Negotiation Team was conducting consultations to prepare for the meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Trump of the United States at the summit of leaders of the Group of 20 (G20), and that the two sides should make concessions in trade negotiations.
Wang said at the G20 briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the global economy is facing a complex and severe situation, especially the intensification of unilateralism and protectionism, which exacerbates the tension in global trade, slows down the growth of trade and investment, and brings great uncertainty to world economic growth.
He pointed out that China will promote more consensus at the G20 Summit, including constructively promoting the necessary reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in order to enhance its effectiveness and authority. WTO faces many deep-seated challenges, and China supports the normal operation and reform of WTO.
"We believe that unilateralism and protectionism, abuse of trade remedies and national security exceptions, imposition of tariffs on trading partners by individual countries constitute a serious threat to Global trade and investment and world economic growth." Wang Shouwen said at the press conference.
He pointed out that China would like to work with all parties to adhere to the open policy orientation and build a free, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable stable trade and investment environment for enterprises and investors of all countries. China expects the G20 Summit to send a clear signal to promote multilateralism and oppose trade protectionism.
In response to questions from reporters, he said he hoped that the United States would uphold the spirit of free trade and lift unilateral measures against Chinese enterprises.
The U.S. Department of Commerce said on Friday that it would ban Chinese companies engaged in research and development of military supercomputers and an agency affiliated to the Chinese government from purchasing U.S. components without approval from the U.S. government.
On Sunday, Xinhua quoted foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang as saying that at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in Osaka, Japan, on June 27-29 to attend the fourteenth summit of leaders of the group of twenty (G20). He will meet with President Trump during the summit.
