Government documents show that the U.S. Department of Commerce has agreed to Tesla's request that the company's Nevada super factory import of Japanese aluminium used to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles will be exempted from 10% tariff.
Tesla filed the request in an April announcement, saying that the aluminium it uses is produced by Japanese light metals (5703.T) and hopes to exempt 10,000 tons of tariff each year.
Documents published on the government website recently showed that the Ministry of Commerce said in its June 5 document that the aluminium produced in the United States was "insufficient in quantity or unsatisfactory in quality". The tariff exemption period is one year. Tesla has not yet commented immediately.
Tesla's request met no objection.
Tesla has previously sought to exempt some Chinese components from tariffs, including Model 3 vehicle computers and Autopilot automatic driving systems, to the US Trade Representative Office (USTR), but was rejected.
