After the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) determined that the U.S. production value of Xinjiang UAVs conformed to the U.S. Trade Agreement Act, Xinjiang said it would assemble Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual UAVs in California's Sierra Rica. The company said this should make it easier for some U.S. government agencies to buy UAVs.
"This new investment will expand the frontier innovation in the United States, so that we can better serve our customers, create jobs in the United States and strengthen the UAV economy in the United States," the company said in a statement.
Xinjiang has been criticized by some parliamentarians and security experts. At last week's hearing of the U.S. Senate Business Committee, Xinjiang was also criticized by security researchers.
During the hearing, Republican Senator Rick Scott asked whether Congress should ban the sale of Chinese-made UAVs in the United States.
"I think it's crazy for us to do business with Chinese people," Scott said at the hearing. "We should do everything possible to buy American products... they are not our friends."
Democratic Senator Ed Markey said at the hearing that Americans with Chinese-made drones are concerned about privacy and security.
US President Trump said in a memorandum on June 10 that "the production capacity of domestic small unmanned aerial vehicle systems is essential for national defense".
