U.S. President Trump hinted Wednesday that the EU's lawsuit against U.S. technology companies such as Facebook (FB.O) and Google (GOOGL.O) is a cross-border act, arguing that legal action against these companies should be American.
"She may hate the United States more than anyone I've ever met," Trump said in an interview with Fox Business News, clearly referring to the European Union's Competition Commission, Vestag. Westag's office was not commented.
European antitrust agencies have been tough on Google and have imposed three penalties on the company in recent years, totaling more than $9 billion.
"What has she done to our country? She sued all our companies. We should be suing all those companies, like Google and Facebook, and we might do the same, "he said. "They sued Apple for billions of dollars. They sue everyone."
"They almost made bilateral business impossible," Trump said, complaining again that Europe had done worse to the United States on trade issues than China.
The EU anti-monopoly system is different from that of the United States. Authorities initiate investigations and then make decisions. Target firms can then challenge these decisions legally.
Trump also reiterated his view that social media companies discriminate against conservatives.
