The U.S. Senate passed a $750 billion defense policy bill Thursday, including a series of provisions targeting China, such as technology transfer and sales of synthetic opiates, to counter China's growing global influence.
The 973-page Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was passed by 86-8 votes.
However, the Senate will vote on another amendment on Friday that will prohibit President Trump from attacking Iran without congressional approval.
Despite escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, the amendment is not expected to win the 60 votes needed to pass the customs in the Republican-controlled Senate.
The Senate NDAA Act requires detailed reports from the Ministry of Defense to prevent the transfer of sensitive technologies to China or Russia, as well as reports on access to the Arctic.
The bill also requires stricter scrutiny of scholars applying for visas to the United States.
At the same time, Chinese and American leaders will meet at the G20 summit in Japan this weekend, and many hope that this meeting will help end the months-long trade war between the two sides.
The Senate's NDA bill still needs several steps to become law. The Senate version must be integrated with the House version. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on its NDAA bill next month.
