Jony Ive, chief design officer of Apple (AAPL.O), will leave this year to start his own design company. He is a close friend and creative collaborator of Steve Jobs, one of the founders of Apple, who launched designs such as the iPhone to help Apple become a trillion-dollar company.
Apple said Ive would continue to work on Apple products at its new company, but the news of Ive's departure caused Apple's share price to fall by as much as 1.5% to $197.44 and its market value to evaporate by about $9 billion.
Ive has been at Apple for nearly 30 years. He led the design of candy-colored iMacs to help Apple recover from the bottom of the 1990s. The iPhone has been hailed by many industry experts as the most successful consumer product in history.
"It's the most significant departure, and he's the central figure in the growth of a company in the Jobs era," said Ben Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies.
Ive joined Apple in 1992, led its design team since 1996, and became Chief Design Officer in 2015.
"Jony is a wonderful flower in the design world, and no amount of praise can describe his contribution to Apple's life and death. From the pioneering iMac before the 1998's to the iPhone, and the grand vision of the Apple Park, he has invested tremendous energy and energy," said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
Nehal Chokshi, an analyst at Maxim Group, said that although Ive had written a brilliant page in Apple's history, his departure would not hurt Apple.
