A woman stood in front of a camera fixed on a tripod, held up a head with her eyes and nose cut off in front of her face, and slowly turned from side to side.
The villagers waiting in line had a number plate in hand. Some villagers say this is the third or fourth time they have done this kind of work.
The project team is located in a sleepy village courtyard with a portrait of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong hanging on the wall. The project is collecting materials that can be trained in artificial intelligence (AI) software to recognize real facial features and still images.
"The biggest project involves tens of thousands of people, all of whom are local people." Liu Yangfeng, Chief Executive Officer of Qianji Data Company, said. The company in Pingdingshan collects and labels data for several of China's largest technology companies.
"We are creating more data sets to serve more AI algorithm companies, which can serve AI development in China," Liu said, declining to disclose his customers.
The surge in data demand for training artificial intelligence algorithms is driving a whole new global industry that collects information such as photos and videos, tags them and ultimately lets computers know what they see.
Companies that tag or annotate data are also known as crowdsourcing platforms, such as AMZN.O's Mechanical Turk, which pays small fees to users for simple tasks. Such outsourcing companies also include Wipro (WIPR.NS) of India and companies that specialize in data annotation such as 1000-machine data.
