The idea of the meeting was put forward by a Twitter article that emerged from Trump. Kim Jong-un accepts it unexpectedly, showing once again the close relationship between the two, but not narrowing the differences between the two sides.
The two met for the third time in a little over a year. They shook hands warmly and expressed their expectations for peace. The United States and North Korea are still technically at war. The meeting was held on the former Cold War front and has been a symbol of hostility between the two sides for decades.
Accompanied by Kim Jong-un, Trump briefly crossed the military demarcation line (38th Line) into the Korean side of the Joint Guard Area (JSA).
A moment later, they returned to the Korean side and chatted with South Korean President Wen Jae-in for a while, forming an unprecedented tripartite meeting.
Trump and Kim Jong-un then held nearly an hour of closed-door talks.
"We just had a very, very good meeting," Trump said after the meeting. "We'll see what happens."
He said the two sides would form their own teams to advance stalled negotiations aimed at prompting North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons. Trump also called "speed is not a problem".
