In a brief announcement, Lagarde said she was "honoured" to be nominated and would temporarily relinquish her role as president of the IMF during the nomination period.
Her appointment needs the approval of the European Parliament. If approved, she will succeed Draghi as president of the European Central Bank on October 31.
Lagarde's second five-year term as IMF president will not end until July 2021. Last September, when the Financial Times asked her if she was interested in the ECB's work, she answered, "No, no, no, no, no."
In a statement, the IMF Council said it accepted her decision to abdicate temporarily and appointed Lipton, the first vice president of the IMF, as acting president, expressing "full confidence" in the American economist.
The Board statement did not provide details on the search for a successor to the President.
