A survey released on Tuesday showed that more than half of British businesses with foreign employees are worried that the government's plans for immigration will affect them after leaving Europe.
In the BCC and Indeed survey, 53% of 380 companies surveyed believed that the current minimum wage threshold for skilled workers outside the EU would apply to all migrant workers after leaving Europe, which would have a negative impact on them.
Fifty-seven percent of the enterprises surveyed said that the government's 12-month work and residence restrictions on low-skilled workers would hurt them.
"Companies in many areas find it increasingly difficult to hire workers with the right skills," says Pawel Adrjan, an Indeed analyst.
"Like any open economy, migration is a way of releasing pressure valves, but as our survey found, the new proposal does not seem to be tailored to the needs of employers." Adrjan said.
He says the health care and construction industries in particular need greater flexibility.
Tightening immigration has been an important part of British Prime Minister Theresa May's plan to leave Europe since the referendum in 2016. It is widely believed that immigration concerns are one of the factors that led to Britain's referendum in favour of de-Europeanization.
