According to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, said Tuesday that Iran would not "fail to respond" to the British seizure of Iranian tankers near Gibraltar.
"Seizure of Iranian oil tankers on fabricated pretexts... will not be unresponsive and Iran will respond appropriately if necessary," Bagherry said.
Reuters had previously reported that the Royal Marine Corps had seized a giant Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar in an attempt to transport oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. The incident has angered Tehran and may exacerbate the confrontation between Iran and the West.
