Asian stock markets were moving up and down on Friday, as investors waited for important trade and financing data from China, doubts about trade tensions between China and the United States, and optimistic expectations of the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates later this month.
China will release June trade data later on Friday, and analysts expect exports to fall as global demand weakens and US tariffs rise sharply, dealing a heavy blow to China.
China will also release credit data on Friday, and the second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data will be released next Monday. Growth in the world's second largest economy is expected to slow to its lowest level in at least 27 years, and authorities are expected to offer more stimulus to avoid a sharp slowdown.
"Important data will be released soon, and I think everyone will wait until the data comes out to build warehouses," said Michael Every, head of Asia-Pacific financial market research at Dutch Cooperative Bank in Hong Kong.
"There will be a lot of signals, but before you see them, that's noise," he said.
