Speaking at a conference in Paris to mark the 75th anniversary of the Bretton Woods system, Lipton said it was the IMF's inherent duty to reflect the growing influence of emerging markets. Since its establishment, the IMF has been dominated by the industrial powers of the United States and Europe.
"The centre of economic activity will be transferred in the coming decades. New financial centres will become more and more important. A new reserve currency may eventually emerge, "Lipton said in a prepared speech.
Lipton's speech was originally prepared for IMF President Lagarde. Lagarde was nominated as president of the European Central Bank (ECB) earlier this month and temporarily handed over her responsibilities at the IMF during her nomination.
Lipton pointed out that Lagarde's appointment in November or as president of the European Central Bank was another change the IMF was prepared to adapt to.
He said the IMF must make changes to maintain a stable and sound international monetary system.
"Free trade, flexible exchange rates and non-destructive capital activities are indispensable elements of global economic prosperity. That is why the role of multilateral institutions, especially the IMF, will be more important than ever. Lipton said.
