During a visit to South Korea Wednesday, David Stilwell, Assistant Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific Affairs, said the United States would "do its best" to help resolve political and economic disputes between South Korea and Japan.
Stavy is currently in Seoul on a visit to Japan and the Philippines.
Until now, the United States had been reluctant to get involved in the dispute, and Stavy did not say what measures the United States was willing to take.
The disputes between South Korea and Japan include compensation imposed by Japan on Korean workers during the war, and Japan's restrictions on the export of high-tech materials to South Korea, which endanger the global supply of chips and smartphones.
