A source familiar with the situation said Thursday that Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) in South Korea sent a letter calling on local partners to hoard more Japanese parts in case Japan expands export controls on South Korea.
The timing of Samsung Electronics's move coincides with Japan's restrictions on the export of some high-tech materials to South Korea, which threaten to disrupt the supply of chips used by global technology companies.
Samsung Electronics recently sent the letter to local suppliers of smartphones and home appliances, the anonymous source said.
Earlier Thursday, Yonhap reported that Samsung had sent the letter and was "doing everything possible" to ensure access to more parts in case Japan expanded controls.
Japan's restrictions on exports of high-tech materials to South Korea may threaten the global supply of microchips and smartphone displays as the situation sharply deteriorated this month.
