The Washington Post reported Monday that Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. secretly helped North Korea build and maintain its commercial wireless network, citing sources and internal documents. The U.S. government blacklisted Huawei for national security concerns.
According to the Washington Post, the Chinese telecommunications giant, in cooperation with China's state-owned Panda International Information Technology Co., Ltd., has carried out a series of projects in North Korea for at least eight years.
The Washington Post said the move would raise questions about whether Huawei's supply of equipment to North Korea violated U.S. export controls. Huawei uses American technology in its components.
In May, the United States blacklisted Huawei on national security grounds, forbidding American companies to sell most of its U.S. components to Huawei without special permits. But President Trump said last month that U.S. companies could resume exports to Huawei in order to restart trade negotiations with Beijing.
Huawei did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but in a statement to the Washington Post, it said it had "no business presence" in North Korea. Reporters could not immediately contact Panda International Information Technology Co., Ltd.
According to the Washington Post, the U.S. Department of Commerce has been investigating possible links between Huawei and North Korea since 2016, but has not yet publicly linked them. The Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
