In a speech Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States had imposed sanctions on China's state-owned energy company, Zhenrong Zhuhai, on suspicion of violating U.S. sanctions on Iran's oil industry.
"We said that sanctions would be imposed on any acts that could be sanctioned, and we are serious," Pompeo said in his speech.
At present, tensions between Iran and Western countries are warming up, as are relations between the United States and China, and major trade negotiations between the two countries have resumed.
The Chinese Embassy in the United States rejected Pompeo's statement.
"China firmly opposes unilateral sanctions and so-called"long arm jurisdiction"imposed by the United States on China and other countries in accordance with domestic law," a spokesman for the ambassador said in an e-mail.
"We urge the United States to immediately correct its wrongdoing and earnestly respect the legitimate rights and interests of other parties."
Zhuhai Zhenrong, headquartered in Beijing, is mainly engaged in the purchase of Iranian oil. In 2012, it was sanctioned by the Obama Administration for trading with Iran. The company is now a subsidiary of Nanguang Group, a state-owned holding company headquartered in Macao.
