U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross told Bloomberg Television on Tuesday that the Trump Administration plans to deal with an exemption application from U.S. technology companies for the sale of products to blacklisted Huawei Technologies Ltd. in the coming weeks.
"We will process these applications quickly," Rose said in an interview. "We have received more than 50 applications from 35 companies, and we expect results in the next few weeks."
When asked if the results would be available in two weeks, Ross said, "I'm talking about the next few weeks."
The day before Rose's remarks, President Trump told executives of several large technology companies at a White House conference that the government would make a "timely" decision on requests from U.S. companies to sell products to Huawei.
Because of national security concerns, the United States prohibited American companies from selling most of its American parts to Huawei without special permits. But Trump said last month that restrictions on Huawei could be relaxed in an attempt to restart trade negotiations with Beijing.
Ross said technology executives attending the White House meeting did not complain that they understood the procedures followed by the government. He said that deciding whether to grant corporate exemptions was a cross-sectoral process involving the Ministry of Commerce, the State Council, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Energy.
"It's not a simple thing, but in general, the principle we follow is... From the point of view of national security, we will treat those sensitive things with a very supportive attitude, "Ross said." Those sensitive things are different. We must deal with them very, very carefully.
