The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation pushed by President Trump on Thursday that will accelerate the expansion of the federal budget deficit and postpone restrictions on Washington's ability to borrow in the next two years.
The House of Representatives approved the bill by a vote of 284-149 and submitted it to the Senate for consideration. The Senate is expected to hold discussions next week.
Overall, the bill would allow Washington to spend $2.75 trillion on a number of federal projects over the next two years and suspend the statutory debt ceiling until July 2021, far beyond the presidential and congressional elections of 2020.
The legislation, which has been brewing for months, was negotiated between Trump administration officials and congressional leaders, a rare case of cooperation between Republicans and Democrats on important legislation this year.
Trump tweeted, "Republicans in the House of Representatives should support this two-year budget agreement, which has helped our troops and veterans a lot."
