South Korean and U.S. officials say North Korea test-fired two short-range ballistic missiles Thursday. This is the first missile test by North Korea after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed last month to restart stalled denuclearization negotiations.
The State Department urged North Korea not to take provocative action and said it still wanted to resume working-level negotiations. Since the failure of the US-DPRK Hanoi summit in February, the work-level negotiations between the two sides have stalled.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States still believes that a diplomatic solution can be reached and expects new negotiations to be held "in a few weeks".
"We hope that diplomatic efforts will bear fruit. We hope Chairman Kim Jong-un will live up to his denuclearization commitment to President Trump, "he said in an interview with Bloomberg Television.
South Korea, which has been supporting efforts by the United States and North Korea to end hostilities, has called on North Korea to stop actions that do not help ease tensions. South Korea's Defense Ministry says the latest test launches pose a military threat.
