Marco Rubio, a Republican senator, said Thursday that President Trump should not allow technology companies to obtain special permission to sell equipment to circumvent the sales ban imposed on Huawei, the Chinese telecom equipment giant.
Rubio warned the Trump government not to issue what he called "sweet permission" to weaken the ban. The license would allow some U.S. companies to export products to Huawei while it is still on the Entity List, which is prohibited.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers expressed concern that Huawei's equipment could be used by the Chinese government for surveillance purposes. Huawei has repeatedly denied it.
"We must sharpen our eyes on the realities and long-term risks of Huawei and other Chinese government-controlled enterprises," Rubio said in a statement.
Huawei did not respond to requests for comment.
The Trump government said in June that it would allow American companies to sell products to Huawei, China.
According to Bloomberg, the U.S. government has postponed its decision to authorize U.S. companies to resume trading with Huawei because of China's suspension of purchasing U.S. agricultural products.
