The governor of Sao Paulo, Brazil, said Huawei plans to invest $800 million in building a factory in Sao Paulo over the next three years. Faced with the pressure from the United States, Huawei is trying to expand its influence in Latin American market.
Sao Paulo Governor Jopono Doria visited China on Friday. He said Huawei was preparing to build the plant to meet expectations after the first auction of the 5G spectrum in Brazil. Brazil is scheduled to hold its first 5G spectrum auction in March 2020.
Huawei told Reuters in an e-mail that the new factory might produce smartphones. "Based on the performance of the smartphone business in the local market, Huawei will consider building a factory in Sao Paulo in the near future," Huawei said in a statement.
According to the government of Sao Paulo, the factory's products will be supplied to domestic and foreign markets.
Huawei has been operating in Brazil for 21 years. It has a factory in Sao Paulo that produces telecommunications infrastructure-related equipment with 2,000 employees.
