The new tariffs on thousands of goods, including clothing and footwear, will be implemented from December 15. The move could support the holiday sales season and protect it from the effects of protracted trade disputes between the world's two largest economies.
"We're doing this for Christmas, just in case some tariffs will affect American consumers," Trump told reporters in New Jersey. "Just in case they impact people, what we're doing is delaying tariffs so that they won't affect the Christmas shopping season."
Just minutes before the announcement of the decision by the U.S. Trade Representative's Office, the Ministry of Commerce of China said that Liu He, Vice Premier of the State Council and Chinese leader of the China-U.S. Comprehensive Economic Dialogue, had spoken with U.S. Trade Representative Lethizer and Finance Minister Nuchin on an appointment.
China's Ministry of Commerce said the two sides agreed to call again in the next two weeks.
Trump said the two sides may still hold talks in early September as planned.
