U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assured Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday that U.S. officials were working to release two Canadians who had been detained in China since the end of last year.
The two Canadians face espionage charges. The two Canadians were detained in China last December after Canadian police detained Meng Wanzhou, Huawei Chief Financial Officer (CFO), at the request of the United States.
The Trudeau administration has urged the United States to do more for the two Canadians. Pompeo said that President Trump mentioned the matter directly when he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of June.
"Please note that our team is working to get the two Canadians released," Pompeo said during a meeting in Ottawa with Trudeau and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland. "It is wrong for them to be detained."
Pompeo later said that the United States had made it clear from the outset that the two men had been improperly detained.
"We have tried other diplomatic ways to help the two men get released," he said at a press conference after the meeting.
"We will continue to do so until they return home and reunite with their families."
When asked whether the US side regarded Meng's boat as a bargaining chip in the US-China dispute, Pompeo answered "No".
