The violence in demonstrations in Hong Kong has escalated again over the past weekend. The Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region, Lin Zhengyue-e, said on Tuesday that the government has zero tolerance for violence, but will not adopt a "violence-prone" approach, but will use the rule of law to restore order and calm in Hong Kong at an early date.
Lin Zhengyue-e, speaking with reporters before attending the Executive Council, said that the government was confident that it could deal with the social disputes. She would also try her best to build a platform for dialogue with the people so as to have a better basis for dealing with the problems brought about by the serious social disputes when the society returned to calm.
"Up to now, the SAR government is confident that it can handle the social disputes for more than two consecutive months, which is also the common aspiration of the general public." She said.
She pointed out that the basis for dealing with disputes was the rule of law, and that the government had never intended to deal with disputes by violence.
"We have a responsibility to use our legal means, including the law, to stop the riots as soon as possible, but this is done in accordance with the law, and you can rest assured." She said.
A signed column in the Hong Kong Star Island Daily today quoted the news as saying that the government feels that deteriorating the situation may eventually lead to serious casualties among police officers or demonstrators. There is a need for urgent legislation to strengthen the basis for legal control of the situation.
