Boeing (BA.N) said on Tuesday that if China and the United States reach an agreement to end a year-long trade war, the company could get orders from China for aircraft.
Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing's chief executive, cautioned in a speech to Reuters at the company's Everett wide-bodied aircraft factory that it was "difficult to predict" the time when China and the United States would reach a future trade agreement.
"The situation is challenging," Muilenburg said. "But I think eventually they will find a solution, because there is a common interest, and we think our aircraft business will be part of the final solution."
"We are hopeful that finding a solution to trade disputes will also benefit aircraft orders," he added, adding that a healthy aviation industry would benefit both countries.
Boeing claims to be the largest exporter in the United States. More than a quarter of its jets delivered last year were sold to Chinese customers. It expects China to need 7,700 new planes worth $1.2 trillion over the next 20 years.
"It's hard to predict whether a successful agreement will be reached," Muilenburg said. "China has not ordered aircraft for the past year and a half. This backlog of demand signals still exists. The demand for aircraft is real.
