After days of intense and difficult talks, the leaders of the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party told the Italian President that the new government should again be led by outgoing Prime Minister Konter.
The two sides still need to agree on a shared policy platform and cabinet, but Dimayo, the head of the Five-Star Movement, and Nicola Zingaretti, the chairman of the Democratic Party, say they have pledged to find common ground in the interests of the country.
"We love Italy and we think it's worth trying," Zingaretti told reporters. Shortly afterwards, Di Mayo said, "We made a commitment to the Italians... An agreement has been reached that we may want to fulfil these commitments."
0730 GMT, Italian President Matarella summoned Comte, who is widely expected to receive new authorization.
The former coalition government, composed of the Five-Star Movement and the far-right coalition party, collapsed this month, and the leader of the coalition party, Salvigny, withdrew from the coalition in the hope of triggering early elections and capitalizing on his soaring support ratings.
But when Konte refused to resign immediately, his actions backfired, giving the Five-Star Movement and the Democratic Party time to overcome their strong hostility and reach agreement on the formation of a previously impossible government.
"The only thing that unites them is their hatred of the Alliance Party," Salvigny said bitterly after meeting with President Matarella. He tried to persuade the president to hold elections.
"Hundreds of millions of Italians are held hostage by 100 MPs seeking to retain their positions."
Konte is a scholar who is considered to be closely related to the Five-Star Movement. The prospect of his leadership of a new government has boosted markets, which are betting that Italy will form a government that is fiscal prudent and avoids confrontation with the European Union.
