According to people familiar with the matter, Huawei expects to launch new Mate 30 mobile phones in Munich on September 18, but it is not clear when these new phones will go on sale.
Mate 30, which will use 5G mobile network, is Huawei's first flagship smartphone launched after the Trump government blacklisted it in mid-May. The U.S. government accused Huawei of engaging in activities that endanger U.S. national security, and Huawei denied it altogether.
A Google spokesman told Reuters that Huawei Mate 30 could not carry authorized Google applications and services for sale because of the U.S. sales ban on Huawei. The spokesman said the temporary exemption announced by the U.S. government last week did not apply to new products such as Mate 30.
American businesses can seek tariff exemptions for specific goods. Google (GOOGL.O) did not disclose whether it had applied for a license to provide Google mobile services to Huawei, but had previously expressed its desire to continue providing support to Huawei.
Reuters reported this week that the U.S. Department of Commerce has received more than 130 applications for sales licenses from U.S. companies, but has yet to issue any licenses.
The uncertainty surrounding Mate 30 reflects the troubles that the escalation of the Sino-US trade war has brought to Huawei and its business partners. Although the United States blacklisted Huawei on security grounds, Trump suggested that it could be lifted as part of a trade agreement.
"Huawei will continue to use the Android operating system and ecosystem if the U.S. government permits," Huawei spokesman Joe Kelly told Reuters. "Otherwise, we will continue to develop our own operating systems and ecosystems."
